The other book festivals -and a famous otter fancier

Edinburgh folk may tend to think there is only one festival, but there is evidence here in Scotland that book festivals are all over the place, giving all of us wherever we live plenty of opportunities to enjoy a real-life author close at hand. The festival at Inverness starts next week and the lovely romantic setting of Lennoxlove is the venue for Scotland’s newest festival in November.
Wigtown is well-established and is up and running already as I write. As usual it has come with a strong mix of Scottish and international names – sometimes our writers are both of course- and a variety of whisky and film related events too. Good to see that they are remembering “Wigtownshire’s most famous son” as well – it is 40 years since the death of Gavin Maxwell. Ring of bright water is out to delight again in a new edition introduced by John Lister-Kaye who talks about his friend on Sunday 4 October. I wonder what the aristocratic loner Maxwell would have made of the douce little Wigtown of his childhood transformed into a literary party.
