The collection here at NLS never fails to surprise – while doing research on Scottish playwright Gregory Burke for our theatre exhibition I have come across a video recording of his debut play Gagarin way – this was the play which sat completed in Burke’s drawer for a year, was sent to the Traverse Theatre, staged in 2001 to great acclaim in Edinburgh and then the National Theatre in London – and the Fife author woke up and found himself the toast of Scottish drama. Burke tells a story of London theatre-goers asking for their money back as “no one told them it was in Gaelic.” There’s a new production running now as part of the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, but the video we have here is of the Slovenian production of 2003 – Gagarinova pot. Our cataloguers note intriguingly that the video includes footage of “some celebratory backstage scenes after the finish.” Cant wait.
