Scottish dramatists on the web – and in the Traverse bar too

Yesterday I had a very interesting meeting with Julian Oddy who is responsible for the theatre database Doollee. We’ve been discussing Scottish plays and playwrights for our Scottish theatre exhibition which opens in December. Since our first contact Julian has been checking his data and identifying individual writers as Scottish – he has doubled the list ! Doollee is something quite special – as it includes performed but not published plays it really is a major tool if you are researching theatre history. The name is apparently not some kind of theatical slang – simply a grandchild’s attempt to pronounce “Julian.” There’s also ample evidence how busy Scottish dramatists are at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh
during August as Playwrights’ Studio, Scotland has set up a book shop with a fine array of published plays. I was impressed to see some very new titles, as well as a CD of the songs which go with the David Greig success Midsummer.
