saltireNext Monday on St.Andrew’s Day we have the announcement of The Saltire Society Homecoming Literary Awards here at the National Library of Scotland. Today has seen the release of the shortlists for the awards. The nominations for Scottish Book of the Year are James Buchan for his elegant ghost story The gate of air, Robert Crawford for his biography of fellow poet Robert Burns The Bard, the Swiss-born Edinburgh-based Regi Claire for her short story collection Fighting it, Janice Galloway for her acclaimed childhood memoir This is not about me, A.L. Kennedy for her collection What becomes, and John Macleod for his account of the Iolaire disaster When I heard the bell. It is a remarkable and varied list – I think there are two especially strong contenders, but we will have to wait to see who carries home the trophy on St.Andrew’s Day.
