Recently I had the great pleasure of meeting Charlie Allan the author, broadcaster, bothy ballad singer, Highland Games champion, and farmer, at his home in Methlick, Aberdeenshire.
Charlie Allan is most recently the writer of two volumes of memoirs from Birlinn The truth tells twice and Them that live the longest and is the son of the writer John R. Allan (1906-1986) whose magical memoir of a rural childhood Farmer’s boy was published in 1935. Charlie Allan was brought up in a household which embraced the worlds of farming, progressive education, and literature – Hugh McDiarmid, Erik Linklater, and Fred Urquhart were among the names featuring in the conversation.
